Gasparilla Sails Smoothly on Davis Islands

Sometimes it just pays to live on Davis Islands. This Saturday was one of those days as a large island contingent made its way to the Sea Plane Basin and along Channel Drive for the annual Gasparilla Pirate Invasion. Crowds started gathering along the Seddon Channel as early as 830AM. Some pre-planners even marked their spaces with cars and ropes the night before, angling for the best spot when the armada bearing beads came cruising in. Islanders Turn Out to Hear About Crime

If you were a criminal Davis Islands is the last place you wanted to hang out on Tuesday night. The Tampa Police department brought out the big guns to talk to islanders about a recent burglaries and crime on Davis Islands. It was standing room only at the Davis Islands Garden Club as TPD Chief Jane Castor delivered the news. Yes, there were 6 more auto and home burglaries in 2009 than there was the previous year, but in the grand scheme of things, not to be considered a serious crime trend. Mix countless hours of practice, preparation and workouts outs and you get results! Just ask 8 year old Carly Griffin. Carly, daughter of Kim and David Griffin, competed with her team from Premier Gymnastics recently in the 2009 Florida USA Gymnastic meet in Lakeland. This is where all level 5 gymnasts in Florida come to show their stuff. Its also where the practice and preparation pays off. Carly finished second in the state with her score, including a 9.4 out of 10 score on the beam. Her team also took first place honors in the medium size team division. Chamber Meets to Plan 2010

The Davis Islands Chamber of Commerce held its first meeting of 2010 on Tuesday. George Arroyo, president presented a recap of 2009 chamber involvement to the group, which included: The 2009 IslandsFest, The Good Day Tampa Bay Broadcast by Fox13, Octoberween 2009, Training Seminars on Social Media, and discussion of traffic calming in the business district. TGH Buys South Tampa Property

The Tampa Business Journal is reporting Tampa General Hospital is buying South Tampa property and planning to move some of it’s office staff from Davis Islands. The article says TGH paid $3.8 million for two parcels at 606 West Kennedy Boulevard. Hospital spokesman John Dunn says the plans are to move some of it’s non-surgical support staff. DI Dock Repair Begins
Workers began replacing rusted bolts and broken bracing at the Davis Islands Boat Ramp today. The Tampa Parks and Recreation staff met quickly and found contractors available that could get the repair work completed in time for Gasparilla, which takes place on January 30. No Garbage Pickup Today
In honor of the Martin Luther King Holiday the city of Tampa has no scheduled garbage pickup today, Monday – January 18th. As per cost saving measures, makeup days are no longer scheduled in the city and the next regular pickup day for the island will be Thursday, January 21. Recycle pickup will resume next Monday.
