Sisters Awarded For Community Service
It began nine years ago as a way to bring smiles to childrens faces on Christmas morning. This week Jeanne Lavettre and Eileen Goldenberg were presented the 2009 Community Service Award by the Davis Islands Civic Association for their work with the Davis Islands Santa Stop. Walter Hill presented the award to the sisters, who have helped collect more than 20 thousand toys over the last few years. Hill told the gathered audience, "Jeanne and Eilleen built the program on their own, from the grass roots level. It's just not Christmas on Davis Islands until the Santa Stop". This has become an island tradition. Many people say its not Christmas on the island until Santa makes his stops during the toy drive. The plans for this years event are well underway. Sisters, Eileen Goldenberg and Jeannie Lavettre started the annual event with the idea it would be a great way to bring the island together at a special time of year, and collect toys for kids that wouldn't normally receive any on Christmas morning.
