A recent rash of dogs left abandoned at the Davis Islands Dog Park and Dog Beach has local animal activists looking for answers. Jennifer Fadal, owner of Wag on Davis Islands, says she is taking care of a dog she found last winter tied to the fence at the Bayshore baseball field.

She told WTSP Ch. 10 in a interview recently that the problem is getting worse as people abandon animals on the islands.”It’s really sad. At the end of the night, when the dog park closes, usually at sundown, there’s just a random dog with no owner, kind of frantically searching for its owner. And no one’s around,” Fadal said.

WTSP recently took a look at the issue this week during the evening news. Here’s link.

Dumping animals is a crime. If you find an animal or know someone that needs to offer an animal for adoption you can contact the Hillsborough County Humane Society and the Animal Coalition of Tampa.

December 12th will mark the 10th year of the Davis Islands Toy Drive. This year plans to be extra special.

Island residents and sisters Eileen Goldenburg and Jeanne Lavettre are getting all of the Santa Stop Signs posted throughout the island. The two launched the annual event as a way of encouraging the island to give back to the community. Each year thousands of new unwrapped toys are given to local charities and distributed to deserving children.

The drive will kick off at 3:30PM in the Davis Islands Village. There is a celebration sponsored by the Davis Islands Chamber of Commerce planned at the new Bailey’s Restaurant on East Davis Boulevard. From there Santa will board his island sleigh and make the rounds to more than 20 Santa stops around the island.

The Santa Stops have turned into neighborhood gatherings during the Toy Drive night. Many neighbors plan food and festivities around the annual event.

If you would like more information, you can connect directly with Eileen and Jeanne on the Davis Islands Toy Drive Facebook page.

DAVIS ISLANDS, TAMPA: Relay For Life of Davis Islands is an annual community event to raise funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society. Although Relay Day is six months away, planning is already in full swing. Last year, Davis Islanders raised over $62,000 for the American Cancer Society, providing needed funds for cancer research grants, services such as Tampa’s Hope Lodge, and programs such as Road to Recovery®. This year’s goal is to field 30 teams to celebrate cancer survivors and remember loved ones lost on April 15, 2011.
To learn more about how the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life is helping millions of people in our community and worldwide to fight back against cancer, attend the upcoming Kick Off Party on October 19, 2010. Enjoy a gorgeous evening at the Davis Islands Yacht Club with food, cocktails and some memorable experiences. Hear Paul B. Jacobsen, Ph.D., speak about his experiences as an American Cancer Society grant recipient and grant reviewer, watch the short film made by Marc Dahl and Jennifer Malin about last year’s Relay For Life of Davis Islands, and learn about how you can get involved with Relay For Life of Davis Islands 2011.
